Negativity bias

Negative events have a greater psychological impact than positive events of the same intensity.

Handle the error, the empty state and the rejection first: that is where the return on effort is highest.

The title of the paper that consolidated this bias says it all: “Bad is stronger than good”. A bad experience weighs more in memory than a good one of the same intensity, and it does not weigh a little more, it weighs a lot. That is why a badly communicated error wipes out several successes, and why the error message deserves more care in the writing than the success screen. Some people make a method of it. The Duolingo owl, which shows up to nag whoever stopped studying, is the bias operating on purpose and with humour.

The bias says that bad weighs more than good of the same intensity, and that seems to hold everywhere. What changes is the size of the weight. NorrisMeasured the negativity bias in anxiety disorders and found greater difficulty disengaging from the negative stimulus.One reference in this work:2025The role of negativity bias in emotional and cognitive dysregulation: a neuroimaging study…See in the bibliography → and colleagues measured the bias in 1,990 patients with anxiety disorders and found that, the larger it is, the more depressive and anxious symptoms the person reports, the lower their resilience and the worse their performance in attention and in cognitive flexibility. How long attention stays stuck on the negative stimulus the study did not measure, and none of this was measured in an interface. What is left for whoever designs is that the same error message reaches people with very different margins to recover from it.

How design translates it

What to do with it on a screen, without turning a finding into a rule.

A badly communicated system error wipes out several accumulated successes, and that is why the error message, the empty state and the rejection deserve more care in the writing than the success screen. Compare “An error occurred. Try again.” with “We could not save because the connection dropped; what you wrote is kept here.” Both say something went wrong; only the second says what to do and what was not lost, and it is the second that the person remembers.

Where it breaks

Where the law does not hold, holds less, or holds in reverse.

Excess caution produces the reverse problem: messages so softened that the person does not realise something went wrong, and discovers the error too late to correct it.

The one-star review weighs more than the five-star one

Two Yale researchers compared, in 2003, the reviews and sales rankings of the same 2,505 books on Amazon and on Barnes & Noble, and measured how each title’s sales changed on one site when the reviews changed there. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive in both places, and even so a one-star review weighs more on sales than a five-star one. The interface shows both ratings with the same visual weight and the same scale. Whoever reads gives more weight to the negative one. The authors explain the asymmetry by credibility, because the author can commission praise and cannot prevent criticism, and I think the two explanations coexist: credibility and the greater weight the negative carries on its own. What is measured in sales is compatible with what the bias claims, and it is not proof of it, because part of the asymmetry may be credibility. A bad comment on your product is worth more than a good one of the same size, and the screen that treats them as equivalent is getting the sum wrong.

Product B has six more top ratings than A.

B has six more top ratings and still tends to look the riskier one: two 1-star ratings weigh more than six 5-star ratings can make up for. It is the same asymmetry that makes one badly communicated error wipe out several successes, and that is why error messages, empty states and refusals yield more per effort.
