Von Restorff effect
When multiple similar objects are present, the one that differs from the rest is most likely to be remembered.
One element different from the rest is remembered. Several different ones, none.
In a list of similar items, the different one is what stays. Hedwig von Restorff measured this in 1933, with lists in which one item was from another category: nine nonsense syllables and one number, or the other way round. The generalisation to other kinds of contrast, such as size, shape, texture and movement, came later, and it is the part that matters most in practice, because emphasis built with colour alone excludes those who cannot tell hues apart and disappears in a black-and-white print. And the effect has a limit that is reached quickly. It exists through contrast with the rest, so the emphasis gets divided, and the more elements in evidence, the less each one stands out.
What the brain does with it
The biological mechanism behind the effect, and how much of it was actually measured.
The item that stands apart is remembered better because it receives more processing on the way in, and not because it carries emotion: the effect appears with neutral stimuli, depends on what the task asks for and vanishes when the distinction stops being relevant to what the person is doing. Who it was measured on, and what changes when the body on the other side is another.
The effect needs a sense in which contrast exists. Outside the visual it probably exists, in the form of emphasis declared in the markup, but nobody has measured that with a screen reader.

What to do with it on a screen, without turning a finding into a rule.
How to measure this in your product
Highlighting the confirmation button with contrast or with a micro-animation of success makes it the item that stays. In a satisfaction survey, the question in solid colour among neutral questions is the one the person remembers having answered. The limit comes quickly, because highlighting many nearby elements cancels the effect completely.
Where it breaks
Where the law does not hold, holds less, or holds in reverse.
Emphasis is a contrast resource, and contrast gets divided. Each new element in evidence takes strength from the others, and in my practice the limit comes at the third. The number is mine, from the drawing board, because what the literature measured was a list with a single isolated item.

The term is older than the evidence that supports it: the structures exist and talk to each other, but they do not form a separate system, and emotion does not live in one region. There are fast and slow circuits, which is not the same thing as there being an emotional brain and a rational one.

The “Apply” that steals the click from the main button

In the Baymard Institute’s checkout tests, participants confuse the “Apply” button, which applies a postcode, coupon or gift card, with the main button of the step. One of them, at Best Buy, said they were going to click Apply without knowing what it did. When Apply has the same visual weight as the button that moves forward, the person clicks it thinking they are moving forward, the page does not change as expected, and they suspect an error. In 2025, 22% of e-commerce sites still required buttons like that. It is the effect failing through an excess of candidates. Two buttons with the same emphasis, neither isolated, and the click goes to the wrong one. The opposite also happens. In tests with eye tracking, the block visually different from the rest of the page was read as an advert and ignored, and in one of the sessions the person fixated once in 132 on the block that answered their question.

How to highlight without relying on colour alone
There are four buttons of equal weight, and one of them is the action the screen wants you to take. Click Highlight the primary action and notice everything that changes in Confirm, which is not just the colour.
Notice that the highlight changes the colour and the text weight and the fill. That is not decorative redundancy: about 8% of men have some colour vision deficiency, and a highlight that exists only in hue simply does not exist for them.
