Mere-exposure effect
Repeating a stimulus makes the brain process it with less effort and, with that, find it more attractive.

It is the foundation of all visual consistency, because familiarity becomes comfort and comfort becomes preference. It has a limit, and it becomes visible when coherence is taken too far. In 2020 Google unified the icons of Gmail, Drive and Calendar into a single palette, and they became similar to the point of no longer being recognisable in the tab bar.
Why there is no neuroscience here
The biological mechanism behind the effect, and how much of it was actually measured.
The brain prefers what it has already seen, and the effect appears even when the person does not remember seeing it. The explanation with most support is processing fluency: repetition makes the stimulus easier to process, and that ease is felt as something pleasant and attributed to the object, rather than to the processing itself. It is a cognitive mechanism, demonstrated by manipulating fluency, and it does not depend on invoking the reward system.
The body this law presumes
Who it was measured on, and what changes when the body on the other side is another.
The preference for the already seen depends on each person’s repertoire, and that repertoire is not the designer’s choice. It changes with the person’s age, with the country and with how much time they spend online. An interface that looks clean to someone who grew up with apps may look empty to someone who arrived via the cash machine.

What to do with it on a screen, without turning a finding into a rule.
How to measure this in your product
The effect is the argument behind visual consistency, stable interaction patterns and the reuse of familiar components. Interfaces that “feel right” often feel that way because they are already known, and not because of functional logic. It is what makes the share button in the same place on every screen worth more than a prettier button on each one. Repetition builds comfort and, without attention to context, makes the product look old.

Preference rises with repetition up to a point and then falls, and the fall comes faster when the stimulus is simple, when it is already familiar and when the person notices the repetition. The launch that cited Zajonc
When Google Drive replaced the Google Docs list, in 2012, two UX researchers at Google treated the switch as a problem of change aversion, the discomfort of seeing the familiar replaced by the unknown. In the paper they presented at CHI 2013, they cite Zajonc and the mere-exposure effect to explain why the old design has an advantage over the new one, until the new one is used enough to become familiar too. The launch followed a script. Warn beforehand, explain the gain, let the person switch between the new and the old version for a while and fix quickly whatever broke. The authors measured satisfaction on a seven-point scale and report a significantly more positive reception than that of other redesigns, without publishing a number. It was not a controlled experiment, and they themselves call for one. The most famous case of the same interval is Facebook’s News Feed, in 2006, which gathered 284,000 people in a protest group the day after launch and ten years later was the product. What changed between one date and the other was exposure. When you replace a screen people know, the first-day rejection is not the final result, and the interval until familiarity is what needs designing.

Pick a card — whichever seems most likeable to you.
It is the parlour trick, and it works with no skill at all from whoever performs it. You may have noticed that one card showed up more often, and even so it pulls the choice, because the brain confuses “I have processed this before” with “I like this”. In the studies where the exposure goes unnoticed, with displays of a thousandth of a second, the preference appears without the person being able to say what they have already seen. The same mechanism explains why visual consistency works in a product and why a repeated advert wears you down and wins you over at the same time.
